Every morning in August and September harvesters from the tiny town of Fellicarolo hike up Monte Cimone to hand-pick bilberries at a height of 1700 meters (5600 feet).


    Unlike its cousin, the American blueberry, native European wild bilberries are almost impossible to cultivate, requiring very acidic and low nutrient soil to grow. Experience the wild bilberry's burst of flavor (and nutrients) and you'll agree the effort of handpicking them is certainly worthwhile!
